Pats release CB Terrence Johnson

The Patriots released cornerback Terrence Johnson Tuesday, according to the team’s Twitter page.

Our View: Johnson was never really a threat to make the roster. His release coupled with trips to the IR for Darryl Richard (foot), safety Bret Lockett (chest), cornerback Leigh Bodden (knee) and safety Josh Barrett (shoulder) drops the Pats roster from 80 to 75.

Josh Barrett (shoulder) hits IR

The Patriots placed Josh Barrett (shoulder) on injured reserve Tuesday, according to the team’s Twitter page.

Our View: Barrett’s reconstructive shoulder surgery made him a near impossibility to play this season anyway, so ending it now makes sense. He’ll be back in 2011 to again compete for a roster spot.

Leigh Bodden (knee) will miss 2010 season

Leigh Bodden (knee) has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston.

Our View: This is a shock. Bodden’s injury was kept under wraps for the most part by New England, but this is obviously a major blow to the secondary. Rookie Devin McCourty will likely move into the starting role opposite second-year player Darius Butler now, and you should probably view this defense as a great matchup for opposing passing games.

Chargers release DL Ryon Bingham

The Chargers released DL Ryon Bingham Tuesday, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View: Bingham hasn’t started a game since 2007, and he missed all of last season with an injury. At 29 years old, he was never going to be an impact player for the Bolts.

Fred Bennett claimed by Chargers

The Chargers claimed Fred Bennett off waivers from the Texans, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View: Bennett’s still young at 26, and he’s got great physical abilities. However, he’s struggled through two down years and may not be ready to contribute mentally. He’ll fight to make the final roster in San Diego.

Plaxico Burress loses bid for work release

Former Giants WR Plaxico Burress has lost his bid for a work release from prison.

The star-crossed Burress’ bad luck continues. The Department of Correctional Services revealed that Plax will not be able to reapply for release before June of 2011, pending appeal. Perhaps we’ll see Burress in a 2011 camp, but he’ll be 34 years old and coming off two missed seasons at that point.

O’Brien Schofield placed on NFI list

The Cardinals placed OLB O’Brien Schofield on the non-football related injury list Tuesday, according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Schofield will be eligible to return after week six, but it’s pretty unlikely that he’ll make an impact this season. The rookie’s still recovering from a torn ACL suffered after his final year at Wisconsin.

James Starks (hamstring) placed on injured/PUP list

James Starks (hamstring) was placed on the reserve/PUP list Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Our View: Starks hasn’t been great at staying healthy since his college days, and this won’t help. His hamstring injury occurred in May, and it looks like it was worse than the team thought. He’ll be eligible to return after six weeks of the season, and he’ll be reevaluated at that time.

Quinn Porter (MCL Sprain) hits injured reserve

The Packers placed Quinn Porter (MCL sprain) on injured reserve Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Our View: That’ll end Porter’s season. He showed some flashes during camp, but he’s got a ways to go where the mental part of the game is concerned. The Pack probably just stashed him on IR for the future.
