No separation in Redskins quarterback battle

John Beck completed 6-of-10 passes for 108 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against the Ravens in the third preseason game.

Beck posted a 90.8 passer rating compared to Rex Grossman’s 99.9 on 8-of-15 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Beck’s four drives ended in two touchdowns, a punt, and a pick. Grossman’s four series ended in three punts and a touchdown, but he was clearly the sharper of the two against the Ravens’ starters. While there’s still no separation in the competition, the Shanahans believe Beck’s upside is higher due to his mobility, quick release, and anticipation. He’s yet to face-plant, which should give him the upper hand despite Grossman’s experience edge.

Tyrod Taylor continues to move offense

Tyrod Taylor competed 11-of-18 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown and added two rushes for 31 yards against the Redskins in the third preseason game.

Hold off on that veteran QB signing. Taylor has shown the ability to move the Ravens offense against backup defenders for the third straight week, compiling 392 yards through the air and 95 more on the ground to go with a respectable 61.4 completion percentage. Asked after the game if Taylor was fighting for a roster spot, coach Jim Harbaugh replied, "Newsflash, Tyrod Taylor has made this team."

Maclin: ‘No doubt’ I’ll play in season opener

Jeremy Maclin told Eagles Television Network during Thursday’s preseason game that there’s "no doubt" he will be in the lineup for the season opener in St. Louis.

"Definitely," Maclin continued. "I’ll be able to play in the last preseason game if they let me." Maclin has been working to get back in football condition while catching passes from Michael Vick. He’s scheduled to resume practicing Saturday, another positive sign. The return of the Eagles’ leading receiver is welcome news for Vick, who got little help from his receivers against the Browns.

Ryan Grant ‘hasn’t looked like his old self’

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Ryan Grant "hasn’t looked like his old self" in training camp.

AOL.SportingNews.com

Silverstein’s colleague, Tyler Dunne, had a similar take Thursday, stating that Grant has been outplayed by James Starks. Though Grant can still pound it between the tackles, his pre-injury burst hasn’t been there this summer. In fact, Silverstein suggests rookie Alex Green is "right on his heels." It’s time to move Grant down draft boards with Starks and Green moving up.

Tebow, Quinn both get first-team reps

Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn both got first-team reps Thursday as Kyle Orton (personal) left practice early.

Associated Press

Orton is presumed to have left to be with his pregnant wife. The usage suggests that Tebow is still very much in the mix for the backup job and not a fourth-stringer like one report earlier this week suggested. The Associated Press expects Tebow to be the first one in after Orton in Saturday’s third preseason game.

Little moves into Browns’ starting lineup

Greg Little started in Thursday’s third preseason game.

NFL.com

Brian Robiskie lined up opposite Little in a two-wide set. Both had three catches for 23 yards, highlighting the underneath passing game the Browns will run this season. Little is now ahead of Josh Cribbs on the receiving totem pole, remaining a low-end flier in deeper formats.

Herrera to start on Saturday

Anthony Herrera will start at right guard in Saturday’s third preseason game.

St. Paul Pioneer Press

Herrera is coming off surgeries to both his ACL and his triceps, but the Vikings are desperate. Chris DeGeare and Ryan Cook have done nothing to establish themselves as starters. This Vikings’ offensive line remains a major area of concern.

Bryant McKinnie looks slimmed down

Ravens LT Bryant McKinnie didn’t look "anywhere near the nearly 400-pound girth" he reportedly showed up at in Minnesota.

Carroll County Times

Per beat writer Aaron Wilson, McKinnie "looked to be in reasonable shape" as he worked out with coaches before Thursday night’s preseason game. "He’s been working out and he’s been eating right," coach John Harbaugh said. "He’s been working on football. We just had a great meeting with him. I’m very impressed with him." If McKinnie really is motivated and in shape, it’s major news for Ray Rice, Joe Flacco and the entire Ravens’ offense.

Foxworth doesn’t have speed back?

Ravens CB Domonique Foxworth (ACL surgery) doesn’t appear to have his recovery speed back.

Carroll County Times

It’s been about 13 months since Foxworth tore his ACL. He got burned repeatedly in Thursday’s preseason game, highlighting the Ravens’ need to rookie Jimmy Smith to acclimate quickly.

Torrey Smith has the dropsies

Rookie WR Torrey Smith has struggled with drops during both practices and games this preseason.

Carroll County Times

Smith is getting slapped with the "bad hands" tag already, but we suspect it’s just a case of pressing too hard and digesting too much in a rookie training camp. Smith looked like a natural pass catcher at Maryland. Regardless, the No. 58 overall pick is not on the fantasy radar in redraft leagues.
