What is a sleeper pick?

When you pick someone who you’re taking a reach on is considered a sleeper pick. Someone with whom is down further on the chart but you know something that nobody else does and you pick them out of character for their draft round.

The best example of a sleeper pick was Kurt Warner in 1999, he only started because the starting QB got hurt and was out for the season. If they picked him as a backup towards the end of the round it wasn’t to start him but still, someone picked him up and it paid off.

The idea of a sleeper pick is to pick someone who you think will have a break out year due to new circumstances and then you draft them a few rounds earlier then normal.

If you took Sidney Rice in 2009 because Brett Favre joined the team, that would’ve been a sleeper pick that turned out for you. I bet most folks got Sidney in round 6 or 7 which is a steal for what he did but if you came up higher for him then it was a move worth making.

Sleepers are drafted in the middle to late rounds of a draft, this is where you look at tendencies of teams and players and you choose accordingly. Again, I’ll go back to Brett Favre and we all know he loves Tight Ends so Visanthe Shiancoe was an obvious pick last year and it paid off.

Take a look at my sleeper picks for the 2010 season and make sure you grab a sleeper for yourself in the middle rounds because it’s not the top guys that you pick that win championships, it’s the middle to late round guys that keep giving you those 10+ points a week that do it for you.

What is a Serpentine Draft or Snake Draft?

INTRODUCTION

One of the big questions you need to ask when you’re invited to play Fantasy Football is what type of draft is it? Are you running the newer Auction Draft or are you running a Serpentine Draft or Snake Draft which is considered old school now?

Doing a Serpentine Draft or Snake Draft means that you start with owner #1 picking first and you go down the list until you get to the last owner and the last owner gets two picks as you go back up the order on your way to the #1 owner picking last in the second round.

BENEFITS

  • slow paced, you get to relax with a beer and hang out chatting
  • easy to scratch off players you wish you had
  • simple and easy, even your grand pappy can play

DRAWBACKS

  • slow paced, you get to relax with a beer and hang out chatting
  • you don’t get a fair shot at elite players
  • with a cheat sheet, even your grand pappy knows to draft Chris Johnson as a #1 RB (2010)

The biggest benefit is that this is a simple and easy way to play, there is some strategy for drafting when you pick players this way and you can read my post about how to pick players in a serpentine draft or snake draft.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Typically the commissioner would pick players from a hat to determine the order in which owners will select players.
  • If you look at the image above, the #1 pick will start off round #1 and they won’t pick again until the end of round #2
  • It’s great to have the #1 pick when Emmit Smith or Brett Favre was in their prime but when those guys aren’t there, you miss out on a lot of players
  • EX. 12 team league – round #1 begins and the #1 owner picks but then doesn’t pick until the end of round #2 which is pick #24
  • I’ve seen it done where the owner picking #12 didn’t get the #13 pick and it when to owner #1 but I quickly removed myself from that league as doing a draft that way is completely unfair in my eyes.

STRATEGY

Serpentine drafts cause you to constantly change your draft strategy as you have to know the relative value of different players per position. Here’s a quick tip but you should read my post about how to pick players in a serpentine draft or snake draft for more draft strategy but I try to only pick starters, never draft sleeper picks early.

CONCLUSION

Serpentine drafts are real slow and boring, they can be spectator sports as you wait for people to pick and in the year 2010, they are or should be a thing of the past.

Auction drafts are much better and allow owners an opportunity to acquire any player and the ability to impact what team gets every player. The action is constant and completely engaging. Auction strategy is  improvisational as you get to take advantage of trends and either buck them or go with them to your advantage.
