Anthony Dixon expects to play Week 16

According to CSN Bay Area, Anthony Dixon (ankle) expects to play against St. Louis Week 16.

Our View: Dixon returned to action against the Chargers, so this isn’t surprising. He didn’t practice Tuesday, and he’ll likely be limited this week, but owners should expect him to play in a key game for the Niners’ playoff chances.

Dixon not practicing on Tuesday

Anthony Dixon (ankle) isn’t practicing on Tuesday according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

Our View: Dixon did return to action after spraining the ankle during Week 15, so it’s hard not to see him taking the field this weekend when the 49ers travel to St. Louis to face the Rams. The situation is worth monitoring, however.

Singletary staying mum on Week 16 quarterback

Coach Mike Singletary said Tuesday that he knows which quarterback will start at St. Louis, but he’s keeping the decision confidential for now.

Both quarterbacks will receive practice reps this week, and Singletary isn’t tipping his hand in any fashion. He indicated that Alex Smith and Troy Smith both know who will start, but he also wouldn’t rule out both quarterbacks seeing time against the Rams. No matter who ends up starting, he’s going to be in danger of getting pulled during the game. It’s a situation to avoid in fantasy leagues.

Singletary mysterious about QB decision

49ers head coach Mike Singletary has selected a starting quarterback for Week 16, but won’t be announcing who it is today, according to Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News.

Our View: Why Mike Singletary feels the need to be so mysterious is anyone’s guess, but perhaps tomorrow he’ll feel kind enough to let us in on his decision. If you own Alex Smith or Troy Smith in a deep league, check back tomorrow and hope for an update.

Report: Alex Smith likely starting Week 16

Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area believes Alex Smith will get the start for San Francisco Week 16.

Our View: That’s somewhat surprising considering Troy Smith burned next week’s opponent, the Rams, for 356 yards without a turnover the last time they met. Still, coach Mike Singletary seems to have hitched his wagon to Alex, and he’ll rely on him to win a key game for the Niners’ playoff chances.

Tukuafu promoted to 53-man roster

The 49ers have signed defensive end Will Tukuafu to their 53-man roster. He had been on the practice squad.

Our View: A 26-year-old graduate of Oregon, Tukuafu has never before appeared in an NFL game. Expect him to again be a free agent again by the time he settles in to watch his Ducks go for the national title on January 10.

Niners ink Cloherty

Colin Cloherty has been signed by the San Francisco 49ers. A tight end, he had been on the practice squad.

Our View: He appeared in one game for the Colts last season, notching a catch for two yards. Although the Niners are ravaged by injury, don’t expect Cloherty to do anything other than block on special teams.

LaBoy ends up on injured reserve

The 49ers have placed outside linebacker Travis LaBoy (knee) on injured reserve, according to the team’s official Twitter feed.

Our View: He came down with the injury on Thursday night in the Niners’ lopsided loss to the Chargers. A solid pass rusher, he had 28 tackles and five sacks in 14 games this season.

Nedney officially placed on IR

The 49ers have officially placed kicker Joe Nedney (knee) on injured reserve.

Our View: Jeff Reed has been kicking in place since Week 13, and will do so through the end of the season. It’s unclear whom the Niners might roll with in 2011.

49ers considering quarterback switch again?

Coach Mike Singletary is open to the possibility of going back to Troy Smith after Alex Smith’s underwhelming performance Thursday night.

"Once again, I want to get back and look at the film," Singletary said. "It wasn’t just Alex." Singletary admitted that he nearly pulled Alex from the game, but it wouldn’t have been fair to Troy without any first-team snaps during the week. "It is a different thing from going from Troy to Alex," Singletary said. "I think it is a horrific thing." At this point, it looks like Alex will get another start at St. Louis.
